History of VleesbaaiVleesbaai has a very old History. This is where the first explorers set foot on land, part of what is now known as the Republic of South Africa. After Bartolomeu Dias sailed around the Southern tip of Africa in 1488, he first reached land at what is now known as Vleesbaai. He named it “Tebia dos vequieros”, or “Bay of the cattle herders”, derived from his observation of Hottentots herding cattle in the area. Lack of fresh water forced him to set sail in a north-easterly direction, towards what is now known as Mosselbaai. There he found a fresh water spring and named it Aguada de São Bras (“Watering place of St. Blaise”) that is still in existence today. |
Vleesbaai is a private beach resort, nestled in a beautiful bay, situated only 20min from Mosselbay.

It was only in 1601 when a Dutch captain, Paulus van Gaarden, on his voyage back from the East, named the following bays: Mosselbaai, Vleesbaai and Visbaai. He named Mosselbaai after noticing the abundance of mussels in the area. His search for cattle, in exchange for copper and iron, led him to the next bay, which he named Vleesbaai. (The Dutch word Vlees translated means meat). The rich History is one of the many elements contributing to the atmosphere of Vleesbaai, seen today as one of the most beautiful holiday destinations. With its sunny beaches and safe swimming areas, it offers an experience sought after by many. |
